EP: Fifty Grand “Exceptional”

20 Sep

We’re proud to be presenting the latest installment in the infamous Aural Sects catalog, this time coming by way of Hollywood; the “Exceptional EP” by Fifty Grand. She went to school in Boston; released her self-titled album back in May, then she lived in Brooklyn for the summer, now she’s in LA. There’s definitely something different this time around. I think we’ll only see progression from Emily at this point. The EP may look short at first glance, but it’s about as dense as brick weed, as nice as any name-brand hydro. Hit off the .wav mediafire download, and you might actually cop an extra remix track, iono.

Hollywood, was actually one of the last tracks to be added to the EP; it’s about rolling around East Hollywood at night. You almost feel like you’ve been there. Exceptional is quite exquisite, for sure worth it’s title, going in hard for the lead single. Earning the project’s namesake, her hip-hop influence is glowing on this one. Leaving The Ground (pt. 2) is back to the eerie, dare I say, witchy, floating, persona. Now Only We Wave is what it’s all about though, this is where I see Emily experimenting with something new, an aesthetic even the greatest crate diggers and bandcamp hoppers can’t find. While this track might embody some witch house [drag] notions, it certainly doesn’t fall into that category itself. Working a hip-hop flip on a 6-minute long, cathedral, orchestra piece, seems to be completely abstracted from the milieu of the genre.

I’m a film major myself so to me, the marrying of sound and image is one of the most thought-provoking, emotionally charged ways of sending a message. The thing is, the best film scores can pull you without showing you anything. And so can the best music. My instrumentals are an attempt to provoke listeners in an emotional way. I think the orchestral stuff does a good job of that.

This EP is absolutely fresh, it’s a new look for Fifty Grand’s jamz. We talked a little about the industry, the witch house scene and it’s sub genres and I think with this EP comes a reminder of how important it is to keep an open mind when listening. Now-a-days we’re able to draw sooo much from the vast internets, I think we sometimes forget what it’s like to stop and really play a project from start to finish. Fifty G’s has really done her part to incorporate that visual aspect. It doesn’t take much to picture those Hollywood streets but it does take something. Press play.
